Wheeler Takes Upper Hand in Mini Miglia Championship

4th June 2014

Dan Wheeler celebrated two podium finishes when the Mini Miglia Championship took place at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire, on 31 May-1 June 2014.

Going into the race weekend with joint lead of the Challenge standings was a daunting prospect given that Cadwell Park was a new track for Dan. An overcast Saturday morning gave the rare opportunity for a warm-up, with the Olney-based driver topping the time charts. Dan got off to an excellent start, dominating the qualifying session with the two fastest lap times, 1:40.247 and 1:40.284, putting him on pole for both races.

An eventful first race resulted in the Dan falling behind Rupert Deeth at the start before reclaiming the lead at the end of the lap. With Deeth retiring due to mechanical problems, Dan focused on pulling away from second-placed Kane Astin, securing a three second lead before the seventh lap. As a result of the final lap board being put out on the seventh lap, Dan began to relax, not realising there were still three laps in which to defend his position. However, Dan held firm to the lead to claim his second Mini Miglia victory of the season.

MD of Milton Keynes-based clothing company Dread, Dan rounded-off his solid weekend with yet another trip to the podium. Starting from pole, Dan conceded positions to hard-charging Deeth, Astin and Le May to put him in fourth place. However, keeping on the pace, Dan was able to pass Le May before the end of lap one, and Astin at the first corner of lap seven. Running in second, he then challenged Deeth for the remainder of the race but was unable to pass the Cambridgeshire-based driver.

With a win and second place finish, Dan has secured 39 points to keep him top of the Challenge standings and two points ahead of Astin, his closest rival.

"A super Saturday and solid Sunday really sums up the weekend. Leading the Challenge standings is a great outcome but things can change quickly. I'll go to Thruxton with a daunting challenge of another new track, so a win here would be a major result." said Dan.

Dan next heads to Thruxton, where he'll take on the fastest UK circuit on 14-15 June 2014.
