Challenging Weekend for Wheeler at Oulton Park

21st July 2014

Battling for the standings in the 2014 Mini Miglia Championship, Buckinghamshire racing driver Dan Wheeler got his weekend at Oulton Park off to a strong start, securing third place starts in qualifying for both races. However, it ended up being a challenging weekend, with Wheeler having to retire from both races.

Going into race one Wheeler started his charge to the front, immediately moving into second and chasing leader Rupert Deeth. On lap five, the pack remained close with Wheeler charging forward again to overtake Deeth, causing a slight collision in the process. Aaron Smith then re-joined from the grass, touching Wheeler and resulting in a major incident with both Smith and Wheeler retiring.

On first inspection, the team considered the car to be too severely damaged to fix in the two and a half hours before race two. However, determination and hard work paid-off as the Projob-sponsored team amazingly got the car on the grid.

Wheeler continued his impressive display of strong starts by moving on Colin Peacock to take second going into the first corner. By lap six, the poor handling due to the earlier incident began to take its toll with Deeth challenging and Wheeler having to concede second place. Running in third, Wheeler then came to an unexpected stop due to an engine shutdown, ending his points finishing race prematurely.

"Unfortunately it was a weekend to forget. My car was severely damaged after the incident and despite the team's best efforts we couldn't get a satisfactory set up in a short period of time." commented Wheeler, Managing Director of Milton Keynes-based clothing company Dread. "I was disappointed with the result in the second race, knowing that the team had worked so hard. Fortunately, we have a few weeks to prepare for the next race and I'm confident that I can get back on track to challenge for the standings."

Wheeler is currently third in the standings on 147 points, shortly behind Astin with 150 points and Deeth with 156 points. Rounds eleven and twelve of the 2014 Mini Miglia Championship will be contested on 24 August 2014 at Donington Park, Leicestershire.
